NTSB Releases Animation of Tracy Morgan Crash
The accident on the New Jersey turnpike left Morgan with brain injuries and killed another comedian, James “Jimmy Mack” McNair.
David Glassman, a Philadelphia attorney representing Roper, said the NTSB did not have all the facts since the board didn’t speak to Roper.
Though Walmart provided fatigue information during its driver training, it was not required to have a fatigue management program, the NTSB said.
“It really makes no sense at all why this driver accepted this last load”, NTSB board member Robert Sumwalt said.
“This driver abdicated each of those responsibilities”.
Morgan and Walmart settled a lawsuit in May brought against the retail giant over the crash, which called it an “amicable settlement”.
The National Transportation Safety Board scheduled a meeting for Tuesday morning in Washington, D.C.
“He had been awake more than 28 hours when his truck struck the limo van, including an overnight drive from his residence in Georgia to the distribution center at which he was based”.
A Wal-Mart Stores Inc. driver hit a limo van carrying comic Tracy Morgan last year because he was so worn out he didn’t notice traffic had slowed ahead of him, U.S. investigators found Tuesday. The driver’s failure to cut his speed to the posted 45 miles per hour limit resulted in a rear-ending of the limo van that carried Morgan and six other passengers.
These are indications that the driver was worn out, Collins said.
“It’s a matter of prevention”, said Christopher Hart, board chairman.
The accident was unusual in several ways and the volunteers didn’t appear to have the training to address some the logistics and coordination needed, Hart said.
But the board added that the actor and his travelling companions contributed to the seriousness of their injuries as none of them were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision.
“Such a safety briefing could have instructed passengers [in] this limo van on the use of seat belts and head restraints and explained emergency egress from the vehicle”, he said. One victim who should have been immobilzed was moved without being secured to a backboard.
Emergency responders had to remove portions of a “plywood panel” that was installed between the passenger area and the cab as the passengers’ only means of exiting the limo van, a sliding door, had become inoperable in the crash, he explained. Roper pleaded not guilty.
The crash left Morgan in a coma and killed McNair.
In June, Morgan told NBC’s “Today” show that he did not remember the crash and still had not been able to return to work but hoped to do so soon.
