Numbers drawn in Powerball jackpot; unclear yet if winner

California State Lottery reported Thursday via their official Twitter account that a “jackpot-winning ticket” was sold in Chino Hills, a suburb the Californian city.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – When the largest-ever lottery prize is finally awarded, the winners and losers will extend well beyond the lucky few who hit the jackpot and the multitudes of disappointed ticket buyers.

The numbers drawn were 08, 27, 34, 04 and 19, and the Powerball was 10. It could take several hours before officials know whether any other winning tickets were sold elsewhere.

There were no jackpot winners on January 9 for the most recent $950 million drawing, and the last time someone won was October 2015. All profits are retained by the state lottery and are used to fund projects approved by the state legislatures.

The Powerball jackpot has climbed to an estimated $1.5 billion, easily surpassing all other lotteries to become the largest such prize in the world.

“If I win, I’ll give it all away to poor people”, said NY restaurant deliveryman Osman Gamie, 43, after buying a dozen of the $2 tickets at a midtown Manhattan grocery.

Winners are able to collect their prize in annual payments over 29 years or take a share of a lump-sum payment of $930 million, the amount set aside for the jackpot winners. The Powerball jackpot for Wednesday night’s drawing is estimated to be more than $1 bill…

That brings the total of winners to at least three after an earlier winning ticket was announced in Southern California. Texas Lottery executive director Gary Grief has said this Powerball offered “absolutely” the world’s biggest jackpot. The jackpot estimate is reviewed daily, and the odds of winning were a mere 1 in 292.2 million.

Officials with the Multi-State Lottery Association, which runs the Powerball game, said they expected more than 85 percent of the possible number combinations would have been bought for the drawing.

The jackpot for the twice-weekly game started at $40 million on November 4.
