Nvidia Recalls Shield Tablets
The recall encompasses all versions that were sold between July 2014 and July 2015, which in effect makes it most SHIELD Tablets out there. Well, it could literally kill you. The company has obviously managed to fix the problem, but it will include replacing your current device with a newer model.
Nvidia, which is best known for its line of graphics processors that power graphical content on computers, pitches the Shield tablet as a slate built for gamers. According to a statement from company officials, there is the potential for the lithium ion batteries in the devices to overheat and create a fire hazard. While Nvidia hasn’t released Shield sales numbers as yet, that’s got to be a fairly high percentage of the gaming tablet’s sales.
Affected users can select “Y01” on the screen to launch the recall application; you’ll receive a mobile notification with the tablet’s serial number.
Keep in mind though that the recall only applies to tablets with a certain battery type.
The company has received 4 reports of batteries overheating due to thermal runaway, including 2 reports of damage to flooring.
Nvidia today announced a “voluntary recall” of its 8-inch Shield Android tablet. It’s an easy-enough process and it doesn’t put any real strain on the SHIELD’s hardware, which is likely why Nvidia feels comfortable asking customers to give it a try. If you see “B01“, then your tablet is ok and safe for use.
To check if your Shield Tablet is affected go to settings and then tap on “about tablet”. Unfortunately it seems they have gone a bit too far with the extreme performance and the battery isn’t able to handle its own.
The model numbers of the devices being recalled are P1761, P1761W and P1761WX.
