Nvidia Shield Android TV box lands in the United Kingdom for £150
Get the Latest GeForce Gaming Technology with a Single Click GeForce NOW is all about instant gratification.
Now NVIDIA is officially launching the service, which it’s billing as a sort of Netflix for games (you know, if Netflix had just over 50 movies). The Grid service was used as a test bed to gather usage data, and GeForce Now represents the final results from all that testing. We’ve optimized every piece of the technology behind GeForce NOW for gaming. The prices are for the main unit and one SHIELD Controller (game pad). You can read the full details about it in our original announcement story, but as a recap it uses the company’s quad-core, 64-bit Tegra X1 processor, a 256-core Maxwell GPU and 3GB of shared RAM. Titles range from old school console favorites to almost brand new PC titles, with plans to eventually release AAA games on GeForce Now the same day they are released on everything else. But it launches in full on October 1, with a new subscription fee.
GeForce NOW launches October 1st with access to more than 50 games including The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the Batman Arkham Series, and several LEGO games. This streaming game service will launch on NVIDIA SHIELD in three regions immediately: North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific. The only downside to this purchase experience is your saves from the Shield TV don’t carry over to the PC download of the game. The new hardware allows game streams at both 1080P and 4K resolutions with 60 FPS.
Beta tested as “Grid”, NVIDIA opted to change the service’s name for its official launch in order to leverage the GeForce brand, which is well known and respected within the PC gaming community.
“GeForce NOW is part of the future of gaming to me”.
That’s substantially cheaper than its nearest rival, Sony’s PlayStation Now service, which charges $19.99 per month for a subscription in the US. NVIDIA has confirmed that as well as being available to buy online, the European launch will also see its availability for the first time through retailers as well. Those powerful innards produce more than double the benchmarking performance of the brand new Apple TV, meaning you won’t see any slowdown as you zip through the gorgeously crisp menus.
The basic spec comes with the controller, but unfortunately the remote and super-sticky, ultra-stable stand (seriously, this thing just won’t budge) are optional extras at £40 and £25 respectively.
This Nvidia screen shot shows games available to Nvidia Shield… “Those GPUs are in the cloud (and) consumers are getting that GeForce experience now streamed from the cloud to their TV instantly”, Daniel said.
Unfortunately Android TV is still a little lacking in the app department, but the main media apps are there, including iPlayer and 4K Netflix.
