Nvidia Shield Tablet Recalled Due to Battery Concerns
Any Nvidia Shield tablet sold between July of last year and July of this year has been recalled by Nvidia.
Nvidia is issuing a voluntary recall for its 8-inch Shield tablets after determining that they may, in fact, combust. The process is simple, but as with all recalls, it’s a nuisance: “NVIDIA is asking customers to visit www.nvidia.com/support/tabletrecall for information on how to obtain a replacement device”.
NVIDIA’s recall notice doesn’t mention how defective tablets will be collected, though the page does mention that defective tablets “will be deactivated remotely and rendered unusable” once owners receive their replacements.
Android 5.1.1 is rolling out now to the SHIELD tablet, so if you own one keep an eye out for the new software. After all, portability is an important part of our lives today, and with the Nvidia Shield, you can enjoy desktop grade graphical performance on your handheld. B01 batteries are now unaffected, but Y01 batteries will need to be replaced.
Specifically, tablets that are equipped with Y01 type batteries are being taken off the market as fast as possible.
Check your battery model by tapping About tablet > Status in the Settings menu.
A notification will pop up on the tablet that includes the device’s serial number. Given that the Shield was created for gamers to play battery-intensive games on, it seemed apparent that many tablets would experience frequent battery discharge and recharge.
