NW Junior Pipe Band places 6th in World Championships
Thousands of pipers and drummers from around the globe have travelled to Scotland to compete for the title of world champions this weekend.
Shotts and Dykehead Caledonia were named world champions – the first Scottish victor since 2005.
It doesn’t matter whether they come first – although of course that would rivet Argyll.
Bands from Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Canada, England, Oman, USA, New Zealand, Australia, Denmark, Switzerland, South Africa, Belgium, the Netherlands and Scotland also took part.
A total of 230 Pipe Bands brought around 8,000 pipers and drummers to Glasgow Green to compete at the event yesterday, while around 40,000 people attended the event over two days.
He said: “We always look forward to coming to Glasgow, the home of the Pipe Band Championships and an outstanding venue for this competition”.
Councillor Archie Graham, chair of Glasgow Life and depute leader of Glasgow City Council, will be chieftain for the championships.
The band also performed at the Piping Live Festival – the world’s largest festival of global piping, marched in a parade of worldwide bands through the heart of Glasgow and toured the countryside.
He said: “The Worlds have been associated with Glasgow for over 60 years and in that time have become one of the most anticipated events the city hosts each year”.
“While our primary reason for being here is to retain the World Champion Title, of which we are incredibly proud, the welcome afforded to us and the rest of the bands from around the world is something we all look forward to and enjoy immensely”.
