NWA Goes ‘Straight’ to the Top Spot
Directed by F Gary Gray, Straight Outta Compton charts the rise of NWA in California in 1988 with the release of their controversial debut album Straight Outta Compton.
“Straight Outta Compton” opened with 60.2 million at the box office.
Straight Outta Compton topped the box office this weekend, debuting at No. 1 with .1 million.
“Straight Outta Compton” has “the benefit of being the one broadly appealing movie out there at the moment – and also the only one that didn’t feature superheroes, superspies or animated minions talking gibberish”, according to a report by Rolling Stone.
“Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation“, the newest action movie in the series starring Tom Cruise, came in second at the box office, grossing $17 million.
The movie stars O’shea Jackson, Jr., Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, Aldis Hodge, Neil Brown Jr., and Paul Giamatti; Jackson, who is Ice Cube’s son, plays his father in the film.
Nick Carpou, Universal’s president of domestic distribution, said it was “elated” with how well the film has been received by audiences. It cost just $29 million to produce. With great reviews and word of mouth I could see this going as high as $200 million in the US.
Meanwhile, the weekend’s only other wide release, The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
The box office uptick did not carry over to Guy Ritchie’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E. And when the trailer hit we knew it was a guaranteed hit.
But it’s Universal’s weekend to celebrate once more in what has become a banner year for the studio.
The musical biopic also represents the sixth No. 1 opening for Universal this year and the best R-rated August opening ever. That said, the movie should be able to at least make its money back by the end of its run, as the film has already crossed $100 million when overseas totals are factored in.
