Last year, one human case of West Nile virus was confirmed in Merced County.

Data from the California Department of Public Health show that 31 counties have reported the presence of West Nile virus compared to 21 counties for the same time a year ago.

The World Health Organization says the disease was first discovered in 1937 in the West Nile District of Uganda. Hopefully, using inactivated virus cells incapable of infecting a host, the vaccine will be able to trigger that response and keep the subjects free from West Nile.
