NY Jets Must Finish Rex Ryan
And he was right. That all went the window after losing to the floundering Ravens on Sunday, dropping them to 9-6 on the season rather than the 10-5 records that their two Wildcard rivals, the Chiefs and the Jets, share. It sounds simple, but nothing connected with the Jets ever is.
That’s when the Jets – Bills history-laden matchup should be ending in Buffalo.
“The thing that kind of gives this team a black eye when we’re looking at it is, I let my mouth get ahead of everything”, the first-year Buffalo Bills head coach said Monday on WGR 550 Sports Radio.
“I’ve got faith, man”, he said.
“We’re not going to the playoffs, so the Super Bowl is next week for us”. He was unemployed for exactly two weeks before the Bills scooped him up.
All right, so this wasn’t what Rex Ryan had in mind when he promised the playoffs. When Jimmy Johnson became head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, Buddy Ryan said winning in the National Football League wouldn’t be so easy. The reason being is that the Bills are the number one leading team in rushing yards per game (154.6), which is a typical characteristic of a Rex Ryan “ground-and-pound” approach.
Sitting at 5-5 after a loss to the Texans, the players said coach Todd Bowles got after them, and the message resonated.
“It’s the Buffalo Bills. There’s a lot on the line”.
Then on August 11, IK Enemkpali punched one of those quarterbacks in the face, broke his jaw – and may have saved the Jets’ season in the process. If that hadn’t happened, Smith would likely have been the starter at the beginning of the season, and the Jets may not have gotten off to a 4-1 start like they did. The Jets’ quarterback coach, Kevin Patullo, was an assistant under Gailey in Buffalo. He’ll have a chance to set the Jets single season record should he toss just one more against the Bills as those 29 tie him with Joe Namath for the Jets top spot. Still, Ryan couldn’t help but crack a smile when asked about the possibility of knocking his former team out of playoff contention.
“These guys already beat you once”.
The Seahawks (9-6) saw their five-game winning streak end. “It’s been a long time since the Jets made it or we made it. I wouldn’t be surprised if that last game decides who goes”. That game, which kicks off at 4:25 p.m., could prove to be meaningless for New England if the Patriots win their 1 p.m. game first.
“Going into a game, I don’t know how many times I’m going to run, but sometimes it’s more than others”. “It was a matter of opportunity, and the Bills gave me that an opportunity”.
On the Jets’ second play in overtime, Fitzpatrick slung a short pass – and slung really is the best word to describe how he throws a football – to Quincy Enunwa, who turned it into a 48-yard gain. Tyrod Taylor completed 130 of 18 passes for 179 yards. On the next play, he floated a six-yard touchdown pass to Eric Decker that ended the game.
After their loss to the Bills, the Jets fell to Houston 24-17 to drop to 5-5.
“We know we are facing a team that is red hot”, Ryan said. “We’ve got to get the next one to get in and that’s how we’ll view it. This is a fun run”.
When the Jets gathered in their locker room after a jubilant mid-field celebration, some of them, Bowles included, were told of another final score: Baltimore 20, Pittsburgh 17.
But they can still affect the AFC postseason picture.
