NY police to say more about deaths that included Canadian
Police in Geneseo, New York say Colin Kingston entered 21-year-old Kelsey Annese’s off-campus residence before 6 a.m. on Sunday and discovered her with another student, Matt Hutchinson, 24, of Vancouver, British Columbia.
According to Geneseo police officer Jeffrey Szczesniak, Kingston was “distraught” over the recent breakup and had “made some suicidal comments to several people and that, but no actual threats to harm Miss Annese or anybody else”. Investigators say the former Geneseo student called his father before turning the knife on himself.
Kingston was also a student athlete, and played on SUNY Geneseo’s men’s basketball team before he left the school in 2013.
It was unclear what the relationship between Hutchinson and Annese was, but Szczesniak said it appeared that Kingston found them together before he allegedly killed them.
Both played games the day before they were found dead, with Annesee scoring a career-best five points in a game against Buffalo State while Hutchinson helped score the final goal in a victory over Franklin Pierce University, according to the Democrat & Chronicle.
SUNY-Geneseo is a picture-book campus in a historic part of NY state.
Hutchinson was a senior and a member of the college’s hockey team, all while also volunteering at the Geneseo Volunteer Fire Department.
While other students spent weekends partying, Hutchinson was working as a volunteer firefighter in Geneseo.
“We take pride in that it’s not a very crime-ridden community”.
“Many of our students were looking forward to coming back and starting a new semester, and then to be hit with this, so given this, it’s quite sobering, and shocking”, said Robert Bonfiglio, vice president for student and campus life at SUNY Geneseo. “It’s one that I’m sure with some time and some healing that hopefully, this can be a learning experience for some young people, too, things, other alternatives maybe that they can do instead of [resorting] to that act of violence”.
“We think our students will be comforted by keeping as much stability in their life as possible, even during a hard period of mourning”, said Battles.

In a press conference today, the police confirmed that incident was indeed a murder-suicide and added that Kingston had killed Amnese and Hutchinson with little resistance, as there was no sign of forced entry or a struggle. She was an Education/Spanish major and a Psychology minor.
Hutchinson was a senior defenseman on the hockey team.
Hutchinson was a former hockey player for the Coquitlam Express Junior A Hockey Club before going down south to pursue his education.
The young man was studying geography and business at the school.
