NYC’s novel salt warning rule set to take effect at chains
Starting December 1, all chain restaurants with 15 or more locations nationwide will have to post a little salt shaker symbol next to menu items that contain more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium (about a teaspoon worth). New York City officials hope that the rule will spur other cities to adopt similar guidelines for restaurants. They will require restaurants to use their salt shaker warning sign in any of their food menu containing more than the daily sodium limit that most nutritionists suggest. Thats about a teaspoon. The restaurant chains will have 90 days to comply with the new rule before the possibility of receiving a fine.

It led development of voluntary salt-reduction targets for various table staples and tried, unsuccessfully, to limit the size of some sugary drinks. It has also pointed out federal regulations, to take effect in late 2016, which obligate restaurant chains to list nutritional information on its menus, render the city’s efforts unnecessary.
“There are 77 million people in this country – that’s one in three adults – who have high blood pressure“, he says.
