NYPD officers injured in Brooklyn shootout; suspect shot
NEW YORK – Two police officers were shot in a confrontation with a gunman who slammed his auto into a police vehicle early Saturday, in the second on-duty shooting of multiple officers in the nation’s biggest city this month, police said.
At around 3:20 a.m., during the apprehension of an armed suspect in Bedford-Stuyvesant, two police officers, assigned to the 81st Precinct anti-crime team, were struck by gunfire. No working telephone number for Funes’ family could immediately be found. Funes then brandished his gun, and fired once as he drove away.
The incident occurred when two uniformed housing police officers, heard a shot fired near the intersection of Quincy Street and Malcolm X Boulevard, and then proceeded to the approach toward the area of the suspect. Investigators are now trying to determine if they were struck by friendly fire.
The officers have been identified as William Reddin, of Lynbrook, and Andrew Yurkiw, of Wantagh.
The other officer, a 3-year veteren, had hospital visits with his wife, father and mother, de Blasio said. Yurkiw was saved from death when a bullet hit his vest. Reddin was hit by bullet fragments from a bullet that impacted somewhere else. He was arrested in 2007 for assaulting an NYPD officer. The other officer was struck below the vest.
Officials say the suspect, Jamal Funes, was shot multiple times. Reddin has nine years on the force.
A gun believed to be the suspect’s was found near the scene, the source said. The partner sustained an injured ring finger.
De Blasio said that he and Bratton had the chance to visit with the officers, who were “alert” and “talkative” after the shooting. “And thank God for what they do for us”.
Yurkiw’s father, Paul Yurkiw, suffered only minor injuries 27 years ago when a motorist fired three shots into his bulletproof vest, Newsday reported at the time.
