NYPD officers recovering after shootout following wild vehicle chase in Brooklyn
FBI terrorism investigators have joined NY police looking into possible extremist ties of a man who shot and wounded two city police officers early Saturday in Brooklyn, law enforcement officials said. Mallory Hoff has more on the officers: Yurkiw was shot in the protective vest, but the bullet did not penetrate it. He suffered blunt force trauma.
One of the officers was shot in the torso and the other was shot in the back, according to the New York Post. Both officers are at the Kings County Hospital Center in stable condition. He was in critical condition. The officers are plainclothes, anti-crime officers assigned to the 81st Precinct. Officials say Funes rammed his vehicle into a patrol auto.
Yurkiw was shot in his bulletproof vest – 27 years after a vest saved his father, Officer Paul Yurkiw.
The officers have been identified as William Reddin, of Lynbrook, and Andrew Yurkiw, of Wantagh.
Police said a. 357 revolver was found in the front seat of Funes’ vehicle.
Suspect Edward Archer allegedly told police after he ambushed Officer Jesse Hartnett that he had pledged allegiance to the ISIS terror group, according to Capt. James Clark, commander of the police homicide unit.
“I’ve met with them both and can report that they are alert, talkative and in the warm embrace of their families”, Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted Saturday morning.
The investigation is ongoing, Bratton said. He said the other officer has been with the department for three years.
This story has been corrected to show first name of suspect is Jamal, not James, per NYPD.
The officers followed the suspect and radioed for help, Bratton said, with officers responding from the 81st and 83rd precincts and Public Service Area 3.
Police would not release the boroughs in which the officers reside.
NYPD Commissioner William Bratton says the officers were shot in a confrontation in Brooklyn just before 3:30 a.m. Saturday.
