NYPD officers shot in confrontation with gunman
According to police, the officers heard shots fired on Quincy Street and Malcolm X Boulevard.
Fumes who has at least 15 prior arrests and an extensive rap sheet is fighting for his life at Brookdale Hospital after being shot at “numerous” times.
Authorities said the officers chased the suspect and called for backup before they were shot.
One officer was struck in the chest but was protected by a bullet proof vest; the other had a bullet in his hip, according to the NYPD.
Both officers are in stable condition and are expected to make a full recovery.

The suspect, identified as Jamal Funes, 34 years old, was injured when officers returned fire, police said. Investigators are now trying to determine if they were struck by friendly fire. Mayor de Blasio said in a statement that the officers “were alert”, although he declined to give their names. At the corner of Malcolm X and Lexington, the suspect, who was traveling the wrong way, rammed a marked patrol auto, and several officers then fired at the suspect, hitting him eight or nine times, officials said. The suspect allegedly pointed a revolver at them and fled in a vehicle. In an ironic twist, the father of one of the officers (a retired cop) had also been shot in the line of duty and was similarly saved by his vest, according to Commissioner Bratton.
Police would not release the boroughs in which the officers reside.
The investigation is ongoing.
Both officers were hit during the shootout. The latest shooting follows a string of encounters that left four other NYPD officers dead since December 2014.
