NYPD Warned of Man’s Plot to Shoot Officers
Hours later the NYPD received a phone call from an anonymous person-believed to be the same person who made the threat to Police in Philadelphia, threatening to “shoot a police officer” in the name of ISIS, police said.
“[The Philadelphia Police Department] received a phone call indicating that an individual was going to shoot a police officer in Philadelphia”, Galati stated during a press conference. The NYPD then recieved a similar call, and sent out an Officer Safety Alert.
Philadelphia police could not immediately comment on the threat, but said a media release would be issued later Wednesday.
“One of the phone calls indicated ISIS”, NYPD Chief of Intelligence Thomas Galati told CBS New York. “We are taking it seriously”.
Shelton is said to have had 20 prior arrests over various crimes, including in connection to the murder of a Peekskill man.
Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence & Counterterrorism John Miller also said officials didn’t have more information to share. Both the suspect and cop are recovering. He has two open warrants, police said.
In 2003, Shelton was convicted of assaulting a man before the victim was fatally shot during an argument over a $40 lottery ticket, the Journal News reported. The plates were stolen from a auto at a NY mall, police said.
Authorities were on the hunt for Marcus Shelton, 36, after an anonymous tipster called police and said he “may have pledged his allegiance to ISIS” and that he “threatened to shoot police officers”, according to a poster circulated among cops. Rely on your training and tactics and trust your instincts. He has multiple last known addresses in the Bronx and Harlem.
Police were working to substantiate all the details but do warn law enforcement officers to use extreme caution and remain vigilant.
