O’Malley suspends campaign with speech in Des Moines
But with 85 percent of precincts reporting, O’Malley found himself with under 1 percent support in the Hawkeye State and called it quits. His voice remained relatively unheard next to Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton.
O’Malley, who is at around 3 percent in the polls, is unlikely to reach the viability threshold at the vast majority of caucus sites.
In his speech to supporters announcing the end of his campaign, O’Malley said he and his family decided “it would be an extreme poverty indeed if the Democratic Party only had two candidates to choose from”.
The sources said O’Malley will make the announcement at 10:30 p.m. ET at his caucus party at Wooly’s, a live music venue in Des Moines, Iowa.
The former mayor of Baltimore and two-term governor of Maryland never got the bump he was hoping for in his race for the presidency. “It’s sad to see him suspend his campaign, but I know so many good things are going to come his way and I’m excited to see everything that will happen”. I wish Governor O’Malley the best. “For me, it was looking at where the campaign contributions were coming from, and Bernie had a lot of small contributions and not a lot of corporations”, said Ruggles. Cruz compared Trump to the self-described “Democratic socialist” Sanders, saying they both favor socialized medicine. “Hold strong in that first alignment”.
O’Malley continued to tout some of the key issues he talked about during the campaign: increasing the minimum wage, overtime and equal pay, combating climate change, comprehensive immigration reform and gun control. Sources close to the campaign trail say that O’Malley didn’t strike a chord with voters. In the first debate, when he told Clinton a no-fly zone in Syria would be a mistake, she retorted that she was “very pleased” he had endorsed her 2008 presidential campaign, effectively neutralizing his attack.
O’Malley’s future will be easier to predict if a Democrat wins the White House – particularly if it is Hillary Clinton, a onetime ally.
O’Malley is expected to address supporters in Iowa within the hour. Thank you all for your support.
The possibility he might help a presidential candidate in Maryland doesn’t offer much to a Democratic ticket: The state is small and already votes Democratic in a general election.
It looks like no matter what Martin O’Malley will consider, many of his supporters have made up their mind.
Some even thought that it was a referendum on Martin O’Malley’s tenure that saw some policy victories for the liberals, but also introduced a series of tax increases.
