Oakland Athletics vs. Boston Red Sox
Sixteen teams have scored a thousand runs in a season, only those Indians of ’99 since 1950.
Manaea used just three pitches to keep Boston off balance, mixing a four-seam fastball, changeup and slider to great effect.
Friday was the anniversary of Opening Day at Fenway in 1939 – Ted Williams’ first Opening Day and Lou Gehrig’s last. The second came in among the flying fists with the Yankees.
Boston looked as if it had a hit with two outs in the sixth at the Oakland Coliseum.

In his 20.0 innings and 2-1 mark this season, Price has a 2.25 ERA with 17 Ks and nine BBs. Oakland has not seen a no-hitter since Dallas Braden threw a flawless game against Tampa Bay exactly eight years ago from today. Manaea isn’t really doing anything different on the mound in terms of velocity or pitch selection. The result wasn’t the same.
Although the play could not be reviewed, Sox manager Alex Cora and Benintendi tried to plead the Sox’ case. He said Saturday that Farquhar “had a strong heartbeat, a good pulse and was breathing well” when he left the stadium after passing out. And this was a remarkable performance from him, and one few probably expected against the on-fire Red Sox.
Cora also went on to say that Craig Kimbrel wasn’t perceived as an option, with the manager only considering using the closer outside the ninth inning on the road righ now if the Red Sox were leading.
The Red Sox have won 16 of their last 17 games SU. Mookie Betts is tearing the cover off the ball and even the much-scrutinized Hanley Ramirez has found his hitting stroke again.
He also got some help from the Athletics’ batters. The Red Sox were outscoring their opponent 123-53, averaging a whopping 6.5 runs per game.
This is the first time the Red Sox have hit five slams before May 1.
“Take advantage of tomorrow, back-to-back days”, Cora said. Obviously, that’s not always going to happen.
Khris Davis supplied all the power by driving in all four runs – all with two out – with a run-scoring single in the first and a three-run home run off Boston starter David Price in the eighth before an announced crowd of 29,804.
The Red Sox had the second longest streak (3,987 games) without surrendering a no-hitter, dating back 25 years when Seattle’s Chris Bosio no hit them.
