Oakland police looking into alleged violence between security guard, Whole
A black man was beaten to a bloody pulp by a security guard at an Oakland Whole Foods Thursday night after an attempt to purchase groceries led to an argument.
In the post, she added that the guard put the shopper into a chokehold and “suffocated” him before throwing him on the ground unconscious. She also backed up a picture of what she said was a staff member calling for “backup” instead of medical attention for the customer.
Krauss of Whole Foods said “an altercation that escalated to violence” had occurred Thursday evening at the Oakland store, located near Lake Merritt at 27th and Harrison streets.
Tragic: Marks says the victim was not “shouting” or “violent” and that he wasn’t threatening anyone inside of the store.
Oakland firefighters reported to police that the man was unconscious when they arrived, but he was later listed in stable condition, police said.
“The graphic images circulating on Facebook and Twitter are disturbing to say the least”, Krauss wrote.
The witness said in the post that the shopper was trying to buy groceries with an electronic benefit transfer card, which provides people with food stamp benefits. The security guard has been fired and the company is looking into the incident with its security firm, Whole Foods said. The guard was reportedly assigned to work at the store through a local company, Admiral Security Services.
With the man lying outside the store’s entrance and the store’s employees failing to act, she said, “The other customers who were watching this all go down basically all demanded that paramedics be called”. Oakland police are investigating the incident as an assault.
In one response to a user, a Whole Foods” official tweeted “We’re moving quickly to gather the facts, we want to make it clear that we take a zero tolerance approach to violence’.
The Oakland Police Department showed up after a call from Oakland fire officials regarding an unconscious man at the store on Bay Place.
