Oakland Raiders show off their renegade side
Brian McCarthy, the NFL’s vice president of communications, tried to down play the gold ban by saying it was for the first two games only, while the A’s still were playing baseball.
“Nobody respects the Super Bowl more than Raiders”, Davis said, via the San Jose Mercury News . The team doesn’t paint the end zones or the team’s shield on the field until after baseball season. But Wednesday afternoon, Raiders owner Mark Davis told news outlets they will paint the 50-yard lines gold after the baseball season. Davis also dismissed the notion that the Raiders were rebelling in protest of Santa Clara getting the Super Bowl.
As it turned out, the national and local media were making a big deal about nothing yesterday as there is reportedly a very logical reason why the lines weren’t gold for the Raiders home games against the Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens.
Because the Raiders share O.co Coliseum with MLB’s Athletics, Davis said the team is simply waiting until after the A’s are finished before painting the field. “I think we had a little bit to do with the merger. We’ve played in 10 percent of the Super Bowls and we hope to play in the next one”. However, Wright refuted the claim that the markers would be changed at the conclusion of the A’s season. But said Wright, “It has nothing to do with baseball….” Davis made that perfectly clear, and said the gold markings would be present for the Raiders next home game, a Week 5 contest versus Denver.
“Davis laughed off the various theories and said he’s already spoken with 49ers CEO Jed York”. It’s unbelievable the ideas that people are throwing out there.
