Obama Acknowledges Americans’ Fear Of Terrorism But Vows To Overcome Threat
Now that at least one of the shooters appears to have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, Americans are understandably fearful that the war against radical Islamic extremism has entered a risky new phase. The U.S.is at war.
In October, Bush nominated White House counsel Harriet Miers to the court from the Oval Office.
And he implored Americans to not turn against Muslims at home, saying the Islamic State is driven by a desire to spark a war between the West and Islam. And their carping would have more credibility if they would specifically authorize military force against the Islamic State as Obama has asked. “If we’re to succeed in defeating terrorism we must enlist Muslim communities as some of our strongest allies, rather than push them away through suspicion and hate”. Marco Rubio, a Republican presidential candidate, said on Fox News.
Last month, Judicial Watch reported: “The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has almost 1,000 active probes involving the terrorist group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) inside the United States”. Attacks like the one in San Bernardino show how hard it is to stop every plot by individuals or by couples who talk only or mostly to each other. They are thugs and killers, part of a cult of death. “It certainly would advance ISIL’s narrative that somehow they were acting on behalf of Islam, when in fact, the ideology that they are seeking to advance is a gross perversion of that religion”, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters at his daily news conference on Monday.
“Daesh does not speak for Islam”.
The president made a similar plea in Sunday’s Oval Office address on counterterrorism efforts. In a new CNN/ORC poll released Sunday, 60 percent of Americans disapproved of Obama’s handling of terrorism, which, according to CNN, is up nine points since May. Gun-rights advocates say that violates the rights of people who haven’t been convicted of a crime.
Imams and mosque workers said the arrested men were victims of biased law enforcement.
BARACK OBAMA: We will destroy ISIL and any other organization that tries to harm us. Maybe we should start calling him Sergeant Shultz instead.
The Obama administration has defended Muslim Americans after attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, California, and the inflammatory rhetoric that came in its wake, while a parallel message to Islamic communities is gaining urgency: please help.
“As commander in chief, I have no greater responsibility than the security of the American people”, Obama said.
Obama also urged a ban on assault weapons. He says there’s also no evidence they were part of a broader network in the U.S.
Obama is scheduled to speak to the nation at 8 p.m. EST. While that seems sensible, the recent attacks in California and Paris should not be used as a pretext to mandate a weakening in encryption technology developed for routine telecommunications. Obama has used the Oval Office as a backdrop, a favorite of past presidents, just three times since taking office seven years ago.
Ryan, in remarks on Monday to the Wisconsin State Journal, called the President’s call for action on legislation addressing the no fly list “a distraction”.
