Obama Announces No New Strategy For Defeating ISIS
The poll comes a day after President Obama addressed the nation on his terrorism strategy, but was conducted prior to the speech and a mass shooting in San Bernardino, Calif., where the attackers were believed to be inspired by ISIS.
We’ve rounded up all the ways terrorists finance their activities below, drawing on the report and other investigations, and ranked them based on how profitable each activity is estimated to be.
With American leadership, Obama said, the worldwide community had established a process and timeline to pursue cease-fires and a political resolution to the Syrian civil war. Here is a notable highlight: “We will continue to provide training and equipment to Iraqi and Syrian forces fighting ISIL (commonly referred to as ISIS) on the ground so that we take away their safe havens”.
He said the White House plans to host a December 17 summit to examine the financing of ISIS and other extremist groups.
Sixty percent also said they think the fight against ISIS is going moderately badly or very badly. That’s what groups like ISIL want. We have no evidence that the killers were directed by a terrorist organization overseas (like ISIS or al-Qaeda), or that they were part of a broader conspiracy here at home (despite communicating with terror groups and pledging allegiance to ISIS right after the attack).
A CNN/ORC poll released Sunday night just ahead of President Obama’s nationally televised address on terrorism found that 53 percent of Americans would support the Pentagon sending ground troops into combat operations against the Islamic State (IS, also known as ISIL or ISIS) in the Middle East. This marked the first time in the history of CNN/ORC polling that a majority of Americans have backed such force. Over the last few years, however, the terrorist threat has evolved into a new phase.
However, the President reminded the nation to not turn against one another by branding the fight as between “America and Islam”, since that was what ISIS wanted and also asserted that the terror outfit in no way represented Islam. And they account for a tiny fraction of a more than a billion Muslims around the world.
Make sure no one on a No Fly List is able to buy a gun or buy powerful assault weapons. This is a matter of national security. “I think it’s time for Congress to vote to demonstrate that the American people are united and committed to this fight”, he added. That we have always met challenges – whether war or depression; natural disasters or terrorist attacks – by coming together around our common ideals.
Obama, speaking briskly and with assurance, described steps the USA military and its European partners, along with key domestic agencies and law enforcement, are taking to combat ISIS.
