Obama congratulates Canada’s new PM Justin Trudeau
Earlier this year, the Harper Government dissolved Parliament and passed the most regressive, anti-worker, anti-union piece of legislation, threatening to destroy collective bargaining rights for unions across Canada and attacking hard working middle class families.
Trudeau’s policy of running budget deficits for a few years, taking advantage of low interest rates to bolster Canada’s infrastructure, proved a popular alternative to Harper’s cost-cutting, said Gary Silverman in the Financial Times.
Trudeau’s win in the 11-week election period ended Monday as the Liberals won 184 of the 338 electoral districts up for grabs in the Canadian legislature, which is a total of 39 percent of the popular vote, according to The Wall Street Journal.
This election campaign also saw a lot of hostility directed towards Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Mr Trudeau’s supporters have been sharing a picture of the young Prime Minister from 1997, when he was a snowboard instructor at the Whistler-Blackcomb resort in British Columbia, Canada. “Canada will go back to multilateralism, back to strong support for the United Nations”. The Prime Minister-designate has stated his opposition to the project and has promised to block it once in power.
The new Prime Minister has studied literature from McGill University and has a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of British Columbia. He will, however, withdraw Canada from the air strikes in Syria and Iraq and opt instead for providing humanitarian aid and training, in fulfillment of a campaign pledge.
Transplanted Canadians in the country are hopeful that the recent election of Justin Trudeau – one of the country’s youngest prime ministers – will bring about positives especially for the youth.
Trudeau has voiced support for the Keystone XL pipeline, but Ayres said the question of jobs versus the environment will weigh on his leadership.
In another sign of Canada’s move away for the hawkish policies pursued by Mr. Harper, Trudeau has pledged to cancel an order for 60 F-35 Joint Fighter jets from Lockheed Martin.
