Obama consoles victims in Oregon mass shooting
US President Barack Obama met in Oregon Friday with relatives of victims of a deadly rampage at a community college, as shootings on two more school campuses left two people dead and four wounded.
The protesters were angry about Obama’s calls for restrictions on guns following the massacre that killed eight students and a professor at Umpqua Community College on October 1.
Addressing reporters briefly after the approximately hourlong meeting, Obama said occasions like these always remind him that any child or parent or family member could suffer such a loss. More than 200 gun-rights activists protested Obamas visit on Friday to Oregon to meet with the families of victims of last weeks campus killings. “The fact is the president has made clear that the goal of his visit is to spend time with the families of those who are so deeply affected by this awful tragedy”.
A few held signs welcoming the president. CBS’s John Blackstone played up how “the protesters gathered at the Roseburg airport carried both signs and guns – a potential nightmare for the Secret Service.”NBC Nightly News featured footage of a Confederate flag flying from pickup truck of one of the protesters – something ABC and CBS didn’t do”.
Obama stated in his remarks that USA shootings are “something we should politicize”.
“What’s become routine…is the response of those who oppose any kind of common-sense gun legislation”, he said.
At a news conference Thursday, Democratic Senate leaders called for an end to loopholes that allow buyers to get guns on the Internet and at gun shows without background checks.
Young Conservatives posted a statement on its website that referred to the Roseburg protests as “truly a attractive sight to see patriots standing up for their Second Amendment rights to protect life, liberty and property”.
Obama “expressed his thanks for the work that Governor Brown is doing as well as the efforts of other state and local officials during this hard time”, said White House spokeswoman Brandi Hoffine. He has said the December 2012 shooting at the Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, was his toughest day as president.
“If the president wants to come and pay his condolences and pay his respects, that’s wonderful, that’s admirable”, she said.
With the 2016 presidential election around the corner, it’s likely we’ll be hearing more about the gun control issue.
KARLINSKY: Her father went so far as to say he would refuse to meet with the President. However, despite protests from parents, gun enthusiasts and the National Rifle Association are rallying behind the shop.
But regardless of agenda, today was about families and the victims.
