Obama: GOP foment on Syria refugees ‘needs to stop’
“When people say we should have a religious test, and only Christians, proven Christians, should be admitted, that’s offensive, and contrary to American values”.
Many high-profile Democratic mayors, including Boston’s Marty Walsh, Houston’s Annise Parker and Baltimore’s Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, now find themselves in states governed by politicians who want to keep refugees from crossing their borders.
Calling the legislation,”untenable”, a statement from the Obama Administration said the House legislation would not increase national security but would “create significant delays and obstacles in the fulfillment of a vital program that satisfies both humanitarian and national security objectives”. That possibility is redefining the debate over immigration in Europe and even the United States, and prompting a backlash against Muslim refugees.
“This is a moment where it’s better to be safe than to be sorry”, he said.
“We are not well served when in response to a terrorist attack we descend into fear and panic”.
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal issued an executive order Monday – the day before he ended his presidential bid – to prevent Syrian refugees from settling in Louisiana.
Although there are indications that one of the IS attackers carried a Syrian passport and may have arrived in France alongside refugees, Germany’s top security official has said the passport might have been a fake meant to stoke fears.
Jeb Bush continues to double down on his notion that any refugees who enter must be Christian and have to “prove their Christianity”. He said he did not know if he could say that they would likely succeed. “I told them that people in the United States are generous and good people but sometimes things happen elsewhere that cause people to forget about their generosity, forget about their native warmth and spirit”. They have no papers; they have no paperwork.
The attacks in Paris have grabbed hold of the race for the presidency, sparking conversations between candidates over what to do with refugees fleeing Syria and how to combat the rise of the terrorist group.
“The American people are deeply concerned about their security. More than ever before, what is taking place in Paris today, as bad as it is, we need to recognize that that can be transplanted here in our own country”, Rep. Robert Pittenger, R-N.C., told CBN News. Senior officials on the call included President Barack Obama’s Chief of Staff Denis McDonough and representatives from the Departments of Homeland Security, State and Health and Human Services, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National Counterterrorism Center.
Through its social media feeds, the Obama administration has aggressively pushed back on suggestions the refugees could post a risk to the USA, posting photos of Google co-founder Sergey Brin and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright as examples of refugees to the U.S, using the hashtag #RefugeesWelcome.
“We are a divided government”, Pittenger explained.
Thus far, the numbers of Syrians admitted to the USA have been limited, and they are vetted in a lengthy process. And he went after politicians who have questioned the administration’s earlier decision to accept 10,000 refugees from Syria. “I think our faith calls us to be compassionate”.
Low-income refugee families with children may be eligible for temporary assistance for needy families, a welfare program in which state rules govern eligibility and the amount of money families receive, for up to five years.
“Johnnie Moore, author of “Defying Isis”, agrees the vetting process needs to be scrutinized more thoroughly”.
“I understand why Americans have been particularly affected”, he said.
