Obama: Low Black Voter Turnout Would Be ‘Insult to My Legacy’
Obama delivered his final keynote address to the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Saturday night and said his name may not be on the ballot, but issues of importance to the black community were.
President Obama is laughing off Donald Trump’s sudden turn-around on his birth.
Chuckling, the President said, “I mean: ISIL, North Korea, poverty, climate change – none of those things weighed on my mind like the validity of my birth certificate”.
The speech came a day after Trump publicly acknowledged Obama was born in the U.S. Trump used the “big announcement” to gain publicity for the opening of his new hotel. That’s despite claims in recent weeks from Trump’s top campaign surrogates that he does believe the fact that the president was born in Hawaii.
Obama responded to Trump’s confirmation of his birthplace by saying, “In other breaking news, the world is round, not flat”.
The evening look is just the latest in a series of stunning outfits, including Obama’s understatement silk blue dress custom-designed by Christian Siriano that she wore at the Democratic National Convention in July.
The event, held in Washington, D.C., pays tribute to the legacy and achievements of individuals who have positively impacted the African-American experience. “Mr. President, not only do we know you are an American, you’re a great American”. “We make a dress [and] we hope it works”, he says. “I mean, he missed that whole civics lesson about slavery or Jim Crow”, Obama said.
“If you care about our legacy, realize that everything that we stand for is at stake, all the progress we’ve made is at stake in this election”, he told the crowd.
Wearing a strapless gold Naeem Khan ball gown with hand-painted gold leaf on black tulle, it was hard to take your eyes of the first lady – and even the president had to acknowledge his wife.
“We understood the power of the symbol”. “[Trump] says we’ve got nothing left to lose, so we might as well support somebody who has fought against civil rights and fought against equality and who has shown no regard for working people for most of his life”, Obama said. “Well, we do have challenges”.
Clinton also made a couple of passing references to the birther controversy and was an award recipient at the dinner, picking up the organization’s “trailblazer” award in recognition of her status as the first female presidential nominee of a major party in the United States.
