Obama meets with family of Baton Rouge man killed by police
The flooding damaged more than 60,000 homes and forced thousands to seek temporary housing, according to estimates.
A man who lost most of his worldly goods in the Louisiana flooding says he and his wife are thankful their family survived.
Visibly sweating in the humid 92-degree weather, Obama hugged residents as he went from door-to-door asking about flood levels and relief efforts. “Too little, too late!”

Obama took some criticism by opting to complete his family’s two-week vacation in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, before inspecting the flood damage personally and meeting with local residents.
But the editorial board praised his decision to come Tuesday. The visit was well-received by local officials, and for a moment it gave Trump a chance to reveal a presidential timber that he insists he has.
“Because it helped to shine a spotlight on Louisiana and on the dire situation that we have here, it was helpful”, said John Bel Edwards, the state’s Democratic governor.
En route to Louisiana, Earnest said the federal government has approved $120 million in assistance for flood victims.
Obama was met at the Baton Rouge airport by a bipartisan group of officials, including Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards, a Democrat, and Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser, a Republican.
Hillary Clinton, Trump’s Democratic opponent, said Monday that she too plans a trip to the flood site. “Trump was over here, but he wasn’t”, she said. Louisiana continues to dig itself out from devastating floods, with search parties going door to door looking for survivors. The shooter, Gavin Long, eventually was shot and killed by police that day, authorities say.
“POTUS spent about 20-25 minutes with the families of fallen officers and the family of Alton Sterling”.
The GOP presidential nominee went to Louisiana on Friday to see the damage and speak with volunteers.
The visit is a reminder of the political dangers and opportunities that natural disasters can pose. In a letter he presented to Obama outlining a list of disaster assistance requests, the governor described the people of Louisiana as “strong and resilient”.
“I didn’t want to divert these police officers, sheriff’s deputies and state troopers and other essential resources and assets to providing security for the president while they were needed in this region”, Edwards said.
“I think it’s great that Trump came into town to show his support”.
On social media, some Louisiana residents and others last week urged Obama to visit.
The administration has said that that payment was sent in cash due to the “strained” state of U.S. “I’ve got no help from the federal government”.
“And one of the things I did when I walked through each of these homes was ask, have you contacted FEMA?” “Let me just remind folks”.
