Obama misspoke about Malik’s visa; she actually had a ‘fiancee visa’
Malik came to the US on a K-1 visa, known as a “fiancée visa”, when she moved to the United States to marry Syed Farook, her husband and accomplice in the massacre in the Southern California city last week.
The White House earlier this fall backed away from supporting a legislative solution to the problem, instead saying that it would encourage technology companies and law enforcement to work together.
Malik is believed to have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State militant group on Facebook around the time of the attack. He said he would also pursue a cease-fire agreement in Syria, which would allow for a “common goal” between the United States and Russian Federation to pursue ISIS. The U.S. has increased its bombing of Islamic State oil infrastructure and will continue to train and equip moderate rebels in Iraq and Syria.
The third part of Obama’s speech was a brief rehash of his administration’s so-far ineffective fight against the Islamic State.
Obama says the U.S.is also working with allies to cut off the group’s financing and will continue to enhance intelligence gathering and sharing. The White House has been particularly concerned about the heated rhetoric from Republican presidential candidates about Muslims.
Rubio also said Obama was “cynical” for spending time urging Americans not to discriminate against Muslims.
The FBI is investigating the paramilitary-style attack as inspired by Islamic State, which controls swaths of Syria and Iraq. “They are thugs and killers, part of a cult of death”. Because when we travel down that road, we lose. By all means, we should not blame all Muslims for the acts of a tiny, violent minority, but there is no evidence that most Americans do.
Obama said the US and its coalition partners are stepping up the fight against IS, pointing to new support from Britain and Germany.
Although Obama averred that Muslims must “confront without excuse” the extremist ideologies being touted in the name of Islam, he noted that it is the “responsibility of all Americans of every faith to reject discrimination”. “To begin with”, Obama said, “Congress should act to make sure no one on a no-fly list is able to buy a gun”. Obama says it’s a matter of national security to prevent those people from getting guns.
Obama used an additional 131 words, roughly 7 percent of the speech, to talk about the need for stricter gun laws.
“The notion that a radical jihadist who is on a no-fly list is going to walk into a local gun shop to purchase a gun is absurd”, Rubio said.
Well, Obama refused to say (he just can’t say it), that we are at WAR with RADICAL ISLAMIC TERRORISTS. “We will be relentless in strengthening our efforts to protect the American people, defeat terrorism and destroy ISIS”, she said. He checked off American successes but said “the threat has evolved”.
Obama, speaking from a podium in front of his desk in the Oval Office, said the couple that had carried out the San Bernardino attack had “gone down the dark path of radicalization” and embraced a “perverted version of Islam” that calls for a war against America and the West.
Fox News host Bret Baier had noted that the speech marked the first the first time since last week’s San Bernardino mass shooting that Obama specifically said the killings were terrorism.
Without providing any specifics regarding the plots thwarted by law enforcement agencies, Obama said that “intelligence and law enforcement agencies have disrupted countless plots here and overseas, and worked around the clock to keep us safe”. As of the most recent public briefing on the investigation, there are no direct links to any worldwide terrorist organizations.
