Obama plans to visit with Detroit residents during trip

President Obama is set to host a reception for mayors from across the country in the White House’s East Room Thursday on day two of the 84th Annual Winter Meeting of the United States Conference of Mayors.

Speaking to autoworkers after taking in the North American International Auto Show at Cobo Center in Detroit, Obama said he would be beside himself if his children’s health were put at risk. “If the kids in a rich suburb of Detroit had been drinking contaminated water and being bathed in it, there would have been action”, she said.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) really doesn’t like idea that President Barack Obama could use executive power to make more corporations disclose campaign spending. But Flint did not return to Detroit water until October 2015 after tests showed elevated levels of lead, which can cause brain damage and other health problems, in Flint tap water and in some children.

The White House said that Obama reiterated to Weaver that his administration will continue to support state and local officials in their response. Corrosive water from the river, known locally as a dumping ground, caused more lead to leach from Flint pipes than Detroit water did. Americans purchased almost 17.5 million vehicles a year ago. “He saved Michigan. Where do you go from there?”

Still, it’s worth noting that Obama has faced sustained pressure throughout his second term to sign this specific executive order, but failed to take action.

The President will discuss how the $85 billion auto bailout, authorized under his administration, saved Michigan’s auto industry.

The auto industry was in danger of collapse when Obama took office in 2009, but reported a record sales year in 2015.

According to the NY Times, a report last spring by the Public Citizen Congress Watch estimated that the proposed directive would apply to 70 percent of Fortune 100 companies, noting that large ones including Exxon Mobil, Apple, General Motors and General Electric had federal contracts worth more than $100,000 over the previous year.
