Obama Praises American Heroes Who Thwarted French Train Terror Attack: ‘They
U.S. President Barack Obama has spoken out in praise of three Americans who successfully stopped a gunman from opening fire on a train from Amsterdam to Paris earlier this year.
He continued, “Because of their courage, because of their quick thinking, because of their teamwork, it’s fair to say that a lot of people were saved”.
“We just wanted to say thank you to them not only for saving so many lives”, Obama said, “but also for making America look so good”.
The trio called upon President Barack Obama on Thursday.
Before a cheering audience of several hundred in the Pentagon’s courtyard, the three California high school buddies who took down a gunman on a Paris-bound train were introduced Thursday simply as “our heroes”.
“It’s these kind of young people who make me extraordinarily optimistic about our future”, he said.
When they were awarded France’s highest honour by President Francois Hollande they showed up for the hastily scheduled ceremony at the ornate Elysee Palace in polo shirts and khakis. Alek Skarlatos and student Anthony Sadler to thank them for their actions. Sadler was to receive the Department of Defense Medal for Valor. Stone suffered deep slash wounds in the attack.
They, along with Chris Norman, 62, a British businessman, disarmed Ayoub El-Khazzani, 26, a Moroccan with ties to radical Islam, after he emerged from a bathroom with an assault rifle, handgun, 270 rounds of ammunition and a box cutter.
Stone, who has been acclaimed for his aggressive role in disarming the gunman, has kept a lower profile so far after receiving medical treatment at a military base in Germany for a lacerated thumb and other injuries.
“I grabbed the handgun, got that away from the guy and threw it. Then I grabbed the AK-47 (Kalashnikov), which was at his feet, and started muzzle-bumping him in the head with it”, Skarlatos said.
Obama also noted that Skarlatos is currently competing on Dancing With the Stars, and honestly, just go ahead and give that dude the trophy now.
