Obama ‘prepared to work’ with Russian Federation, Iran on Syria
U.S. President Obama sits after making remarks at the United Nations General Assembly at U.N. headquarters on September 28, 2015 in New York City.
Republicans often claim that Russian President Vladimir Putin believes that Obama is “weak” on worldwide affairs, but that talking point was squashed over the weekend.
The Russian leader, speaking in an interview broadcast on the eve of his meeting with U.S. president Barack Obama, also sharply criticised USA military support for Syrian rebels, describing it as not only illegal but counter-productive.
In a further sign of Europe’s shifting positions, French President François Hollande said on Sunday that Assad’s ally Iran could play a crucial role in finding a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis.
Like Russia’s earlier move to bolster the government of President Bashar Assad by deploying warplanes and tanks to a base near Latakia, Syria, the intelligence-sharing arrangement was sealed without notice to the United States.
Although the speeches by Obama and Putin are likely to draw the most attention, other world leaders among the some 160 expected to attend the meeting will also touch on globally sensitive topics.
One reason for the shift is that Mr Putin has stepped up his support for Mr Assad, moving troops and weapons into Syria, which have reportedly made their first bombing raids against IS targets.
“The United States is ready to work with all countries, including Russian Federation and Iran to resolve the conflict”, Barack Obama said.
“So this is the most important thing which encourages us and pushes us to provide assistance to Assad”. It will be their second meeting since the U.S. and Cuba restored diplomatic ties late a year ago, and will follow Pope Francis’ visit to both countries. “We do not support the presence of Syrian government officials who are part of a regime that has brutalized its own citizens”, Warren said.
The United Nations chief, in unusually hard-hitting words, also urged the world to unite against the “blatant brutality” of extremist groups including the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
Russian Federation seemed to grab the activity in global endeavors to end the contention in Syria on Sunday as Washington mixed to devise another system for the war-assaulted nation and France sent warplanes to bomb Islamic State targets.
