Obama promises aid to help Louisiana fully recover from flooding
Nationally, Obama has been criticized for waiting almost two weeks to tour flood-affected areas.
Thirteen people died and more than 60,000 homes have been damaged in flooding that started almost two weeks ago.
Long after these floods recede and fall away from the headlines, FEMA and our colleagues in the federal response effort will be here alongside state officials as long as we are needed.
“We are heartbroken by the loss of life”, President Obama said.
The flooding has created political headache for the White House as critics blasted Obama for being too slow to visit the state.
“Tuesday’s too late”, Mr Trump told Fox News this weekend.
“It gives you hope because you’re trying to rebuild and start all over again, and then here the president of the United States came down to see what is going on”, Naketa Woods said.
President Obama received a great deal of the criticism for refusing to cut his vacation time short to visit Louisiana sooner.
– President Barack Obama will make his first visit to flood-ravaged southern Louisiana on Tuesday morning.
The president’s visit was not without controversy.
Earnest said that $120 million in aid has already been approved and is starting to be paid out to flood-impacted residents.
The White House released a statement the afternoon of August 19, announcing Obama’s trip and saying, “The President is mindful of the impact that his travel has on first responders and wants to ensure that his presence does not interfere with ongoing recovery efforts”.
Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton has said she will visit later, in an implicit criticism of Trump.
“I feel for him and a lot of families out there”, Alford said.
In contrast to the controversies associated with the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, state and local officials have praised the federal government’s handling of Louisiana’s current crisis.
The White House says Mr. Obama would also meet with the families of officers killed or injured almost two weeks later by a gunman, apparently in response to Sterling’s killing. The gunman, Gavin Long, was shot dead at the scene.
President Obama also planned to meet with the family of the black man whose death last month in a police shooting sparked protests and mass arrests.
The White House has released few details about Obama’s brief trip.
“I want the people of Louisiana to know is that you’re not alone on this”. “It just, all my friends, family all our friends on this street, look at it”.
He said that he preferred Obama wait to visit, in order to “preserve resources”.
“This is my first home that I bought on my own”, said Marlette Sanders, standing in her empty home.
Barack Obama was visiting one of the affected neighbourhoods in Baton Rouge. “We’re going to need a lot of help, a lot of prayers, and a lot of work to get back”. I ain’t asking for help from the government. “To know that I’ve been here nine years – everything that I’ve worked for is just gone”.
