Obama, Putin discuss Syria, Ukraine in quick summit meet
President Barack Obama has said that while he won’t spend his time criticising Donald Trump, but he will speak up for American “values or ideals”.
President Rodrigo R. Duterte said on Monday he missed the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ photo shoot and gala dinner in Lima, Peru because of jet lag.
It was the first time they had met since the U.S. presidential election and the shock victory of Donald Trump, who has pursued a far warmer relationship with Putin than Obama did. Russian Federation was accused by United States intelligence agencies of influencing the USA presidential elections by leaking hacked emails from people close to Hillary Clinton.
Samorukov said he believes Russian Federation is doing its best to resolve differences with the USA over Russia’s annexation of Crimea and its backing of separatists in eastern Ukraine, as well as disagreements about how to deal with the civil war in Syria and President Bashar Assad. However, Putin admitted that there was relatively more tension recently between the two countries.
Duterte, who has made headlines for openly stating his intention to shift away from Washington to foster better ties with China and Russian Federation, also confessed to Putin during his meeting that he regarded the latter as his idol.
It was unclear what the two were discussing, and their words weren’t audible to journalists present.

He’ll meet Sunday with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in between other sessions with world leaders attending an annual Asia-Pacific summit being held in Lima, Peru.
“Well, you have been able to do a lot in a short period of time in terms of developing all round partnership between our countries and with respect to promoting greater trust and confidence between us”, he said. “We have been trying to coordinate with this US Administration”.
President-elect Trump’s election has raised speculation and concern he might do less to challenge Russian aggression. Gabbard, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, also said she and Trump discussed legislation that she is pushing that would end what she described as “our country’s illegal war to overthrow the Syrian government”.
At the G-20 summit in China earlier this fall, Mr. Obama and Mr. Putin met to negotiate a ceasefire in Syria but weren’t able to reach an agreement, with Mr. Obama saying “gaps in trust” between the USA and Russian Federation were hindering discussions. “They did not defeat them”, Duterte said. She said that could push the US more deeply into Syria, where the war now in its sixth year has killed as many as a half-million people.
