Obama Reaches for Upbeat Outlook in Final State of the Union
The White House said Obama would not address the 10 U.S. Navy sailors who were being held by Iran Tuesday night.
He acknowledges that expectations for congressional action on his agenda in this election season are low.
“When politicians insult Muslims, when a mosque is vandalised, or a kid bullied, that doesn’t make us safer”, he noted. “We will fight for policies that simplify the tax code, reform our welfare system, and provide patient-centered healthcare in order to help these struggling families and give hope to millions of Americans who believe their leaders have forgotten them”.
Says Obama, “We just might surprise the cynics again”.
King criticized President Barack Obama as “the most pro-abortion president ever”. Justices Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas aren’t attending. Detroit automakers are also likely to participate. One Cabinet member is selected each year to not attend the speech in case a catastrophic event incapacitates the president and other attendees.
Trump was the target as well of South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, who delivered the Republican response to Obama’s speech. Health care inflation has slowed.
The comment – and others during his roughly hour-long speech – appeared to be a swipe at GOP front-runner Donald Trump, whose presidential campaign has teed off on illegal immigrants and Muslims, among others.
Haley is the daughter of Indian immigrants.
Politics loomed over the speech. “Even worse, we are facing the most risky terrorist threat our nation has seen since September 11th, and this president appears either unwilling or unable to deal with it”. It will only happen if we can have rational, constructive debates.
Obama also said he had tasked Vice President Joe Biden, whose son died a year ago of cancer, to lead an effort to find a cure for the disease.
Democracy, he said, “doesn’t work if we think the people who disagree with us are all motivated by malice, or that our political opponents are unpatriotic”.
President Barack Obama will give his final State of the Union address on Tuesday evening.
Trump, meanwhile, summarized his take on the speech in a tweet: “The #SOTU speech is really boring, slow, lethargic – very hard to watch!” he wrote. He’s speaking from his desk in the Oval Office as he finalizes the text of the speech.
Aides say Obama plans in his final yr in workplace to make good on a 2008 election marketing campaign promise to shut Guantanamo jail, which has housed overseas terrorism suspects after the September eleven, 2001, assaults on america.
Obama is calling on all Americans to get involved and pay attention. “We’ve got some big choices ahead”, he said.
Aisle seating brings with it not only a chance for a handshake, an autograph and a quick conversation, but also TV exposure for an address that’s viewed by millions nationwide. Ted Cruz said that, as president, he would leave an empty seat for the victims of abortion during the address.
Cary Dixon, from Huntington, was invited to sit with First Lady Michelle Obama. “But they do not threaten our national existence”, Obama said.
“The last president to deliver an end-of-term State of the Union address was President Jimmy Carter on January 16, 1981, days before President-elect Ronald Reagan was sworn into office”, TheBlaze reports.
“The president sees this as an opportunity to talk to the country bluntly about the challenges that we face and the opportunities that are there for the taking”, Earnest said.
