Obama’s move on guns may have only modest effect on violence
A tearful Obama addressed media in the East Room of the White House, flanked on both sides by gun control activists and families of the victims of gun violence.
In a speech full of emotions ranging from frustration to sadness, U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday outlined the gun control actions he will take using his executive powers.
President Obama plans to introduce a more sweeping definition of gun dealers, with all sellers signing up to a register and running background checks on all prospective purchasers.
At the Point Blank gun shop and range in Mentor, owner David Holtz said the measures will have little impact on licensed gun dealers.
The new measure would deem anyone “in the business” of selling guns to be a dealer, regardless of where he or she sells the guns. As a result, background checks will likely become more detailed and more people could be prohibited from purchasing a gun. And he said, “I think we can disagree without impugning other people’s motives….” U.S. Rep. Ken Buck, a Republican whose district includes Longmont, responded with anger. “Today, the President trampled the goal and substance of the Bill of Rights by unilaterally imposing Second Amendment restrictions”. It guarantees a right to bear arms. He said, “There could be stricter regulations and everyone should get background checks”.
“They come in with their so-called private collection, which consists of dozens or hundreds of the same make and model of guns”, said Helmke.
Sladky wishes states would just enforce the current laws. He also agreed law enforcement should be focusing on the existing laws. “He is not clarifying a vagueness of the law, he is adding specifics where already the law provides specifics”.
The executive order requires background checks for buyers at gun shows, flea markets or online. “And by the way, it happens on the streets of Chicago every day”.
“I believe they’re positive”.
President Barack Obama’s critics on Tuesday savaged his gun control steps as an unlawful assault on Americans’ constitutional rights, with Republican White House hopefuls pledging to immediately repeal the orders if they are elected in November.
Does this mean he’s trying to take away everyone’s guns? .
Several Democrats spoke out in support of Obama’s plans, including the three candidates running for their party’s presidential nomination.
Among a few illustrations he provided was, “If we can set it up so you can’t unlock your phone unless you’ve got the right fingerprint, why can’t we do the same thing for our guns?”
