Obama says attacks on police hurt Black Lives Matter cause
Some of the protestors gathered at the Police Memorial Building and nearby Pre-Trial Detention Facility after the arrests were made, per JSO.
But the protest did have some stressful moments.
Despite the calls for calm from all sides, at least 312 people have been arrested over the weekend at protests from NY to Chicago, and in St. Paul, Minnesota, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where two black men, Philando Castile and Alton Sterling, were shot to death by police.
Nathallie Hughes, 17, Julia Lyle, 18, and Maria Flores, 18, were the leaders of the protest and the administrators of the Facebook page.
Patricia Richter, 26, of New Richmond, said she attended the rally because “people’s silence is just them being complicit in the violence and everything that’s happening”.
A Louisiana man was accused of posting a video online showing him in his vehicle behind a police auto, saying he wanted to shoot and kill an officer.
“Understand that we’re here not to box you in but to keep you safe.'” CP caught up with the march on Grant Street as the crowd came to a halt in front of the Allegheny County Courthouse. “It is time for The Pentagon to be consistent in its actions – and just as they rightfully declared ISIS a terror group, they must declare Black Lives Matter a terror group – on the grounds of principle, integrity, morality, and safety”.
“We’re at a tipping point”, he said.
Protests nationwide have continued day after day since the shooting deaths of the two black men, both of which were captured on cellphone video.
“No one group organized the event, which I thought was super interesting”, Parks said. “That’s weird. That’s way out”. Given that white people still have a large demographic majority, it makes ideal sense, though it may come as a surprise given the overwhelming coverage given to black victims. The Black Lives Matter march could increase local pressure already on politicians like Mayor Buddy Dyer and OPD Chief John Mina.
“The only thing that’s going to stop this is a new system, and that’s what we’re out here advocating for”, Sale said. Our duty, to honor the fallen, is to ensure that Johnson’s vile and cowardly act has the opposite impact from what he sought.
Participant Dickie Holman, who is a pastor, said all the killings need to stop and they can only do that by joining together.
“It’s lovely. It’s awesome”, she said. “We need it because without the voice of the oppressors, we will stay oppressed”. Blue lives matter. Does anything matter anymore? “The relationship between the community and the police seems like it is good.’ I agree”, Tito Valdes, one of the event’s organizers, said.
“It means a lot because there are more Latinos and there are more white people than there are black people”, he said.
“In the last couple of years, we’ve seen this violence become an ever-present reality in our lives”, Lenz said. Sniper fire killed five police officers and wounded seven more, police said.
But right-wingers easily pushed back, dismissing the movement with the retort, “All lives matter”. “No arrests and no civil rights violations, just a community of 2,000 plus diverse young people coming together in solidarity to declare #BlackLivesMatter”. Representatives of the movement provided a statement on the matter while trying to distance the movement itself away from Johnson’s actions.
The officer then gave the crowd and the event’s organizers a bit of advice on where to assemble once they got to the courthouse.
Three days after the city of Dallas was rocked by the murders of five police officers, the community has embraced the police force with a show of love and support, even as racial tensions spike in ongoing protests across the nation. Instead, he was surrounded by millions of onlookers, most of whom, I feel certain, suffered with and for him.
