Obama says USA is not underestimating Islamic State group
As Obama said in his speech at the G-20 on Monday, “the things that need to be done are the things we’re already doing”. The president said that refugees would be accepted “only after subjecting them to rigorous screening and security checks”, and he also said that many of them were also fleeing terrorism.
“We have the finest military in the world and the finest military minds in the world”, he said.
Obama has faced growing calls to send large numbers of ground troops to Syria to uproot ISIS’s base of operations there.
He suggested this would just lead to a “permanent occupation” of those countries and an unsustainable USA obligation when terror attacks emerge from places like Yemen, Libya, North Africa or Southeast Asia. The USA should also boost surveillance of Muslim communities, King said.
“We’re also dealing with people who’ve suffered the horrors of war, women and children, orphans”.
Authorities reported yesterday that at least one Paris attacker appears to have entered France amid a stream of Syrian refugees, and news emerged that France overlooked an Iraqi warning that terrorist assaults were imminent a day before Paris was attacked.
“Today again I’m calling on leaders to commit the resources that this fight demands”, Obama added. French officials yesterday were still trying to identify people involved in the Paris conspiracy, and said as many as three of the seven suicide bombers who died in the attacks were French citizens. Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, who have Cuban heritage. We need to sort out how to focus on the terrorists that we need to keep out of the country. “Who would take care of the number of Christians that right now are completely displaced?” Bush said on “CBS This Morning” Monday, just hours before Obama’s press conference. He added: “You know, I had a lot of disagreements with George W. Bush on policy, but I was very proud after 9/11 when he was adamant and clear about the fact that this is not a war on Islam”. “On this they should follow his example”. But here’s a new one, “In an accident of timing that captures his cluelessness, the president actually declared on Friday morning that Islamic State had been “contained”, practically boasting in a TV interview that, ‘They have not gained ground in Iraq and in Syria'”.
“Slamming the door in their faces would be a betrayal of our values”, he said. The USA wants to “intensify” its cooperation with France in intelligence sharing and conducting air strikes in Syria, he said.
He huddled for 30 minutes with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday, agreeing during the informal meeting on a path toward a political transition in Syria.
During his news conference in Turkey, Obama also seemed to refer to Carson for saying he has better advisers than the administration when it comes to the question of Syria. Their aim is to convince the rebel groups and the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to stop fighting each other and instead to fight ISIS. This concept – while incredibly hard to execute – is now a cornerstone of the anti-ISIS strategy. He said the agreement will allow intelligence personnel to “pass threat information, including on ISIL, to our French partners more quickly and more often” and could help prevent further attacks.
