Obama, Span’s king discuss cooperation on migrant crisis
Their Majesties King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain are expected to recognize the city’s 450th commemoration at a series of ceremonies before taking part in the United States-Spain Council worldwide Summit later on, according to a news release.
The USA must work together with all European countries to ensure that refugees “are safe; that they are treated with shared humanity; and that we ultimately… deal with the source of the problem, which is the ongoing crisis in Syria”, Obama said during a meeting with King Felipe VI of Spain.
Washington decided not to carry out a strike, however, when Syria agreed to destroy its chemical weapons stockpiles, although the global community has expressed concern that the country may not have destroyed all its weapons.
Obama also had a message for voters in the Spanish region of Catalonia, who will vote this month in local elections being billed as a referendum on independence from Spain.
“America accepted Vietnamese refugees in the order of 350,000, nearly one million Cubans…so to suggest that we’re only going to take 10,000 Syrians is really an injustice”, said Salam Al-Marayati, the Director of Muslim Public Affairs.
President Obama won’t watch Wednesday’s Republican presidential debate, his spokesman said Tuesday.
It’s not every day you wake up and find your town is getting a royal visit, but, hey, turns out the King and Queen of Spain will be in town today.
The White House has been a revolving door of royals, with visits from Jordanian King Abdullah II, Prince William, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, and Saudi Arabia’s King Salman – all in the past year.
