Obama Speaks at White House Reception for Black History Month
“We know it is Black History Month when you hear somebody say, ‘Haay Michelle!”
Matt Brown, the BSU’s president, agrees and believes there is a need for the public to recognize that the black historical narrative must be ongoing and continuous and not simply confined to the month of February each year. Instead of going to bat for her right to have a Black History Month, she made a decision to flip the argument on its head.
On Feb. 16 the Multicultural Center celebrated Black History Month with a Harlem Renaissance theme. Yes, British black history is vast and its roots do date way back but, when you think of black history, what comes to mind: Martin Luther King Jr. or Mary Seacole? A suggested donation from each guest will help CAAHA continue to elevate the importance of edifying the lives of African Americans who live ordinary lives while creating extraordinary history and legacy, that benefits the entire community.
At the Multicultural Center’s Black History event, the NAACP set up a table displaying prominent figures.
“What’s so inspiring about these young people and their generation is that they don’t see black history as a relic; it’s not something to study in a book”, Obama said at the reception.
However, not many know about the individuals who have invented technologies that are being used on a day-to-day basis, like Madame CJ Walker, the Black woman who invented the hot comb, which created foundation of what many people use today, known as the flat iron.
“There are some stories that needed to be told”, says Dr. Anderson. That’s not a very pretty picture – but it’s our picture, our story. As we make our Sunday treks across Belle Isle, we cover many topics and sometimes I opt to stay silent and simply listen and learn. Well, many thought that since it was somewhat the beginning of the new academic year, this month would install pride and identification into black kids due to the concern of them and society.

Black heritage is about working hard and living meaningful, purpose-driven lives. Each contact in this directory includes full information, including email addresses, telephone numbers, and social media links where applicable, and they all work at companies owned by and/or led by African Americans. You’ll see images of people who had great pride, people who had great hopes for a bright future and were willing to fight for it.
“We (UNITE) will have a table to promote our goals of Universal, eNgaging, Inclusive, Transformative Education and to garner interest in a black student union”, Sawyer said.
In his remarks, he emphasized the influence of African-American culture on the nation.
This year, take advantage of this special time of the year.
The five-acre museum is on Constitution Avenue, between the Washington Monument and the National Museum of American History.
