Obama Tweets Congratulations to Team USA as Rio Olympics Close
Yet as athletes were celebrating, one U.S. Olympian put another history-making stat in the book.
With her four Olympic gold medals, and as the American flag bearer in the closing ceremony, she caught the eye of President Barack Obama.
So while the women’s team took the all-around gold and Biles left Rio with three four individual medals, it’s important to remember that when it comes to abs you could bounce a quarter off of, everyone who climbs atop that balance beam deserves a place on the podium.
Four-time world champion Simone Biles became the first female gymnast and black woman to carry the USA flag in the closing ceremony – an honor rightfully deserved. US Olympic broadcaster NBC also noted the queue for “Simone selfie central” while others remarked that it was momentarily holding up the procession of athletes entering the Macarana stadium.
The ceremony was the culmination of a whirlwind two weeks for the gymnast. China won 70, and Great Britain earned 67. The 51-medal margin over runner-up China is the largest in a non-boycotted Olympics in almost a century.
Brianna Rollins, Nia Ali and Kristi Castlin swept the 100-meter final, 4×400 relay team of Kathleen Baker, Lilly King, Simone Manuel and Dana Vollmer won the 1,000th gold medal in Team USA’s history, and the women’s basketball team finished up being regarded as perhaps the best ever assembled.
But Biles said the best part of the Olympics was winning team gold. She is a food passionista, helicopter mom and an unapologetic southerner who spends every night with the cast of The Young and the Restless by way of her couch.
