Obama unlikely to halt vacation to visit flooded Louisiana
However, the president warned Democrats in the room against becoming too cozy with the positive poll numbers as of late, saying it has been an unpredictable election season. The flooding has led to nine deaths and over 20,000 people rescued.
Last week, as torrential rains brought death, destruction and misery to Louisiana, the president continued his vacation at Martha’s Vineyard, a playground for the posh and and well-connected.
President Obama took a brief break from his 16-day vacation on Martha’s Vineyard to attend a Democratic National Committee fundraiser on the island, where he made a strong case for Hillary Clinton as he seemed to brush off Donald Trump. Within hours, water levels rose by over four feet. The agency said on Wednesday it was providing federal aid to assist with rental payments for temporary housing, grants for home repairs and property replacement, unemployment assistance for Louisiana residents who lost jobs due to the flooding, and assistance to small businesses affected by the rising waters.
Jeh Johnson, Homeland Security Secretary, will visit the region on Thursday to assess the ongoing response, according to the White House. As of Thursday morning, no announcements of a plan by President Obama to visit the state were announced.
Earlier in the week, Obama phoned the state’s governor, John Bel Edwards, shortly after approving the Republican’s request for federal disaster funding.
The newspaper noted that Obama interrupted his two-week vacation on Martha’s Vineyard earlier this week to attend a fundraiser for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton on the MA island.
In 2005, then-President George W. Bush was faulted for flying over but not touching down in Louisiana in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
