Obama Unveils Cancer Research Task Force – White House
“We’re trying to get to a quantum leap on the path to a cure”, Biden said Thursday in a blog post.
Biden, in an energetic, 20-minute speech to House Democrats, urged them to contrast their record and priorities with the conservative Ryan budget passed by House Republicans in 2014, before the Wisconsin Republican became House speaker, singling out education funds cuts in the budget.
Vice President Joe Biden told fellow Democrats on Thursday that they should see it as “a gift from the Lord” if Republicans nominate Sen. Bernie Sanders and former Sec. of State Hillary Clinton.
Turning political prognosticator, Biden acknowledged that “it’s been a tough last couple cycles” – an apparent reference to Republican romps in the 2010 and 2014 midterm elections – but insisted that Democrats have “a real shot” to retake Congress.
Obama offered a list of successes during his tenure, including cutting the unemployment rate and the deficit while promoting more renewable energy investments.
“If we stay true to those principles”, Obama said, “our party is not just going to have a good year, America will have a good year”.
Biden has never hid his feelings about Trump, calling his immigration message “sick” over the summer and railing against the Republican candidate’s plan to bar Muslims from entering the country. There are 188 Democrats in the House, compared to 257 when he arrived at the White House, and the Democrats’ chances of regaining control in the near future are slim.
“Democrats will win in November”, Mr. Obama said Thursday evening.
Democrats wrapped up their three-day issues retreat on Friday after hearing from Trevor Noah of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” and AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka.
“And by the way we may be given a gift from the Lord in the presidential race here”, Biden said to laughter.
Major highways, including I-95 and I-395, were briefly closed around Baltimore around 6 p.m.as the president’s motorcade worked its way into the city. She said Wednesday that members are reviewing the agreement and would not be bound by last year’s opposition.
A number of Democratic leaders have noted their own personal connections to the city. D’Alesandro III, also served as the city’s mayor, from 1967 to 1971.
