Obama unveils executive actions to curb gun violence
A visibly emotional President Barack Obama, at one point wiping tears from his cheek, unveiled his plan Tuesday to tighten control and enforcement of firearms in the US, using his presidential powers in the absence of legal changes he implored Congress to pass. “Obama at his best” said some, while New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof tweeted in agreement: “We should all be crying about 32,000 American gun deaths a year”.
Hoosiers looking to purchase a gun at the Indy Trading Post Tuesday were not all opposed to the President’s executive action. The administration hopes it will stop gun sellers from getting around the background-check requirement by failing to register as licensed dealers.
States providing information on people disqualified from buying guns due to mental illness or domestic violence. “No one knows what it’s like until it happens to you”, said LaManno.
“We still hold out hope the Congress will understand they need to do something”, she said, but added that the most effective route now seemed to be to advance background checks and gun trafficking on the state level.
“If this stops gun violence great”. Additionally, the President has put forth measures to require dealers to report when weapons are lost or stolen.
Other steps include 230 new examiners the Federal Bureau of Investigation will hire to process background checks.
As of today, if you are in the business of selling firearms-from a store, at gun shows, or over the internet, you must get a license and conduct background checks. “People that have guns legally usually aren’t doing it. Mental health screenings and background checks are good but don’t take them away from everybody”. And not one of Obama’s executive orders will make Chicago any safer in 2016 than it was in 2015. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said they would be hard to halt since Congress agreed on a budget deal last month to keep the government running through September.
Meanwhile the attorney general and governor are praising the president’s actions.
In 2015 alone, there were 330 reported mass shootings in the USA according to the Gun Violence Archive, but the president acknowledged that his executive actions would not prevent all gun violence in the county.
Needless to say, Republicans weren’t happy that people will stay have pretty much the same access to firearms.
