Obama Visits US Mosque for the First Time
President Obama, who for the first time visited a mosque in the US on Wednesday, urged people to call off bias against Muslims after US Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump in December during his campaign had called for barring Muslims from entering America, according to reports.
It may have been President Barack Obama’s first visit to an American mosque, but his appearance at the Islamic Society of Baltimore on Wednesday was just the latest stop on Obama’s anti-Trump tour.
The study was released on the same day President Barack Obama visited an American mosque for the first time during his presidency, offering a high-profile rebuttal of harsh Republican election-year rhetoric against Muslims.
Whilst reiterating the importance of Muslim Americans in uniting the country as “one American family”, the president also called on the Islamic community to help tackle radicalization.
Muslims, who are estimated to make up almost 1 percent of the US population, have faced increasing discrimination and hostility in the wake of deadly attacks in San Bernardino, Calif., and Paris linked to the self-declared Islamic State, Muslims and others say. Obama said Muslims shouldn’t have to live in fear. He also acknowledged the “hugely distorted” negative view Muslim Americans have had to endure with the rise of terrorism-related violence by Islamist extremists.
Obama’s visit was aimed at showing Americans another side of Islam.
The US president said there was a warped image of Islam in the country and encouraged members of the faith to speak out against terror.
He also cited the complaints of two Muslim teens who reported feeling “scared” and “confused”.
Obama told the Islamic Society of Baltimore that the television should incorporate Muslim characters that not related to national security.
“The best way to fight terrorism is to show the USA does not suppress Islam and refute lies to the contrary”, Obama said in his historic address to Muslim community from a mosque in Baltimore, Maryland.
“An attack on one faith is an attack on all our faiths”, he added.
Obama spoke about the contributions Muslims have made to American society. “We must never give them that legitimacy”.
“Islam has always been part of America”, he said, detailing the beginnings of the religion among African slaves brought to America.
