Obama vows to defeat ‘new phase’ of terror
Covering President Obama’s Sunday night address on Monday’s CBS This Morning, co-host Norah O’Donnell turned to White House correspondent Major Garrett for “new insight on why the President spoke last night”. In his address to the nation in the aftermath of the act of terrorism by a radicalised couple killing 14 people in California last week, Obama refused to describe the incident that the U.S. is in war against radical Islam.
President Barack Obama says he understands why Americans are anxious about the threat of terrorism but is reassuring Americans the US will overcome it.
Obama said that while the US has been fighting terrorism since 9/11, the threat has “evolved into a new phase”.
“With Obama making the statement that he wants to change legislation, get it to where its harder for the public to purchase high-capacity firearms, folks are going to start running to get what they can get”, said Clay Ausley, the owner of Fuquay Gun & Gold. “I think it’s time for Congress to vote to demonstrate that the American people are united and committed to this fight”.
The president implored Americans to not turn against Muslims at home, saying the Islamic State was driven by a desire to spark a war between the West and Islam.
The president said nothing during his remarks about improving the administration’s efforts to counter the Islamic State’s highly prodigious propaganda operation, which has found a receptive audience among disaffected Muslims around the world.
“They have killed more Muslims, nearly eight times Muslims, as they have killed non-Muslims”, Hayee stated.
Obama urged Muslims in America and around the world to “decisively and unequivocally reject the hateful ideology that groups like Daesh and Al Qaeda promote”. “ISIL does not speak for Islam”, he said. When more evidence is revealed that the attackers were connected with ISIS (and don’t we have enough evidence already?), the White House can say something like, “No one from ISIS in Syria directly controlled the attack or picked the victims”. “We will carpet-bomb them into oblivion”.
Obama said the way to defeat the terrorists who are intent on attacking us is to “enlist Muslim communities as some of our strongest allies, rather than push them away through suspicion and hate”.
Now more than ever, voters need to watch the upcoming presidential debates, listen to candidates’ ideas on foreign policy and keeping America safe, regardless of political party, biased media or how many “freebies” they offer.
Pressure Obama has resisted pressure from some Republicans to go beyond that by sending thousands of combat troops to fight Islamic State militants in Raqqa at the heart of their self-styled caliphate.
“Our success won’t depend on tough talk, or abandoning our values or giving in to fear”, he said.
Since the attack on December 2, investigators have been trying to determine if the suspects were inspired by or acted in allegiance with ISIL or another radical terrorist group. They hold us in contempt. They hold our values in contempt. They hold our belief in tolerance and decency in contempt. They hold our democracy, the means by which we will make our decision tonight, in contempt. And what we know about fascists is that they need to be defeated. Obama noted new contributions from France, the United Kingdom, and Germany, more USA special forces and training for local ground forces.
