Obama vows to veto bill increasing screening for refugees
“And it’s our obligation”, Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin said on the House floor ahead of the veto threat. When Breitbart.com called to confirm that, Ryan spokesman Brendan Buck said, “We’ll be looking at all options for keeping America safe”.
Donald Trump accused the administration of sending refugees primarily to Republican-led states, and more governors announced their objections to receiving any refugees from the civil war in Syria.
On Monday, the Home Office told express.co.uk that the Government’s refugee program remains unchanged, inspite of the terrorist attacks in Paris last week which killed at least 129 people.
“First they were anxious about the press being too tough on them during debates. Now they’re anxious about 3-year-old orphans”, Obama said.
Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Arizona, said the President’s partisan rhetoric “went over the line”.
“I haven’t called for a halt or a moratorium”. Homeland Security Chairman Michael McCaul of Texas, “It could be a cut or additional funding” for programs in the bill. “Thus, the substantive result sought through this draft legislation is already embedded into the program”. House Republicans including North Carolina Representative Richard Hudson and California’s Devon Nunes have proposed “a new certification process” whereby the federal government would somehow guarantee that refugees have no ISIS ties.
The agencies use biographical and biometric information to try to certify that the applicants are who they say they are, including an interview with a DHS officer. “New York City is a proud immigrant city”, he said, “and we will not turn our back on that history or the people being persecuted and fleeing war”.
-The Homeland Security Department makes the final decision on whether a refugee is accepted.
Flake agreed, saying the briefing actually changed his mind about the vetting program. “As long as Obama says they are not terrorists he can bring in as many as he wants”.
Referring to Ted Cruz’s claim on Fox News that Christians fleeing persecution and genocide should be provided a safe haven, but that Syrian Muslims should be sent to “majority-Muslim countries”, Obama added that a religious test and a discrimination against Muslims was “offensive”. Yeah, it doesn’t help. “On riders, we are just beginning the process, so there is no yes or no on anything at this stage”, he said. “We are refugees seeking safety”.
The most significant briefing will come Tuesday evening, when all House lawmakers will receive a classified briefing from the Federal Bureau of Investigation director and Homeland Security secretary on the Paris attacks.
Since the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the United States has settled 784,000 refugees, according to the Migration Policy Institute. I wonder what Democrats think of that.
A few Republicans on Capitol Hill are already attacking the bill.
They described the legislation, set for a vote Thursday, as an attempt to find a middle ground.
President Barack Obama is threatening to veto any such measure, and signaled on Thursday he anticipates the resettlement plan will go forward.
But senior Democrats in Congress and their allies with refugee resettlement organizations have also come out in opposition to the bill, arguing that what Republicans insist is a “pause” will in practice cripple the refugee program for months or even years.
Refugees of all nationalities, including Syrians and Iraqis, now undergo the most rigorous and thorough security screening of anyone allowed into the United States, “all aimed at ensuring that those admitted do not pose a threat to our country”, the statement said. “This is why this city is so divided in Washington, D.C., our country is divided, because they speak that way”, Christie said.
