Obama warns states they can’t refuse Syrian refugees
The shock of the recent attacks in Paris have had a significant impact on the motion to suspend the plan.
He further criticized the administration as “hypocritical” for threatening states that might not comply with refugee resettlement while turning a blind eye to sanctuary cities – that refuse to cooperate with immigration enforcement. The governors of 31 states, all but one Republicans, have blocked any Syrian refugees from entering their states. Those fears were confirmed on November 19 when French authorities announced that several of the attackers, including ringleader Abdelhamid Abaaoud, likely returned to France via a refugee migrant route through Greece after traveling to Syria. Even fewer have gained asylum in the United States.
“Portland has many problems of its own”, said Bhawinee Banchongraksa, an global student studying English at PSU. “I think the process, on its face, looks safe”. “Nearly 400 years later, we remember their part in the American story, and we honor the men and women who helped them in their time of need”. Was this a coincidence? The bill would halt this program, as Republicans believe that, in light of the current situation, the national security is at stake.
However, not all Americans agree with this sentiment.
The bill’s backers say that if the Obama administration has really vetted all of the refugees as it says, such certification should be easy and will go a long way toward ensuring Americans that someone is directly responsible for the program. But Obama is speaking to his people in the language they know best: the language of fairy tales and folklores.
Streams of Syrians have fled to Europe this year as their country’s civil war showed no signs of ending. It’s the federal government’s role to process applications for refugee status, and up to the federal government to decide who is let into the country. Hundreds of thousands of people have made their way to Germany while other European nations have opened their borders, but to lesser numbers. Why can’t Obama agree to a sensible pause while a system is put in place to keep terrorists out of the U.S.?
In three US opinion polls published by Bloomberg, NBC News and the Washington Post/ABC News this month, 53 to 56 percent of respondents said no more Syrian refugees should enter.
The letter from the federal resettlement office said would-be refugees “are subject to the highest level of security checks of any category of traveler to the United States”. “They have not been a source of terrorist concern”. It doesn’t hurt that this happens to be what most refugees themselves seem to want. Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times wrote that this is “a stain on our conscience” that must not be repeated. With this process, just three out of 785,000 refugees admitted since 9/11 have been arrested with terrorism-related charges. “But helping Christians doesn’t have to come at the expense of other refugees like Muslims who also are persecuted”, she said. But he said it’s not in the refugee program, but rather the visa program. The United States is leading an global coalition fighting the group in Syria and Iraq.
