Obama will not support presidential candidates who refuse to back gun reform
President Obama participated in a town hall meeting tonight at George Mason University in an attempt to explain a new wave of executive actions his administration is taking to curb gun violence.
But Obama didn’t hold back when asked by CNN moderator Anderson Cooper about the notion that the federal government – and Obama in particular – wants to seize all firearms as a precursor to imposing martial law.
He said the National Rifle Association (NRA) had deliberately misrepresented proposed legislation on gun control.
“The president’s desire is to engage in a serious conversation, both with people who share his views about common-sense steps we can take to make our community safer and keep guns out of the wrong hands, but also have a conversation with those who disagree”, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said Thursday. “When would I have started on this enterprise?”
History will not look kindly on the failure of Congress or President Barack Obama to enact reasonable gun safety measures, despite an unprecedented spate of massacres that have horrified the nation. Obama will talk with Cooper about gun violence and take questions from a live audience at George Mason University.
Obama became emotional while announcing “executive action” on gun control.
Mr. Obama noted that gun sales in the USA typically spike whenever he introduces a new rule regarding guns, or whenever there’s a mass shooting.
Obama has struggled to toughen gun restrictions during his presidency, even after a string of mass shootings left more than 400 people dead in 2015.
The American Firearms Retailers Association, another group that represents gun dealers, did participate. He lied when he said it was the industry (not customers) who were opposed to the immature technology of so-called “smart guns”.
“And by the way, there’s a reason why the NRA is not here”, Obama said.
House Speaker Paul Ryan also spoke out against the president’s gun control proposals.
Mr Obama’s attack on the NRA came two days after unveiling a package aimed at keeping guns from people who should not have them.
Kyle told President Obama, “The thing is that the laws that we create don’t stop these horrific things from happening, right?”
The law does not specify how many guns a person has to sell to be considered “engaged in the business” of selling guns and neither did Obama.
“I’d like to have an opportunity to sit down, and be a part of the decision making”, said Ryan Pennock, the owner of Thunderbird Tactical Inc of Wichita, Kansas.
A new CNN/ORC poll finds that 67 percent of Americans say they are in favor of President Obama’s executive actions on guns issued this week.
