Oculus Rift Pre-orders Are Live, Price Revealed
Oculus on Wednesday disclosed the long-awaited preorder details of its Oculus Rift VR headset, which will cost $599, and first begin shipping on March 28.
The Oculus Remote features a trackpad and a few buttons to help you navigate VR experiences and 360 videos, browse the Oculus store and play games. True, earlier versions of the Oculus Rift, namely the DK2 version, were priced at around $350, but they apparently relied on older technology.
The controller is flawless for a variety of games, including Lucky’s Tale, the wonderful VR platformer developed by Playful, which is also free with every Rift.
Before the Oculus Kickstarter campaign in 2012, Luckey says he knew some people at Sony working on virtual reality. That’s good news for those who may end up inclined to instead seek the headset at retailers, a select number of which will have the Rift available “in limited locations” starting in April.
VR company Oculus announced that the first consumer model of its Rift headset The Oculus Rift will cost $599.
You’re also going to have to front the shipping costs, as well as import fees, because Oculus will not be shipping the Rift to SA, at least not initially.
The Oculus founder also confirmed that more accessories are on the way in the near future, and he expects the future of virtual reality to be less about gaming. Phones that cost $599 cost a fraction of that to make, same with mid-range TVs that cost $599. Many are still chomping at the bit to get their hands on the headset, but the Oculus Rift price has changed that somewhat. If you’re interested in the Rift you may want to get in quick because the initial shipments have already sold out. This is considerably cheaper than getting a $600 Oculus Rift and spending another $1,500 for a VR-compatible PC.
If you’re interested in picking one up but don’t have a PC capable of using it; take a poke around their website and check out the compatibility requirements list and tools.
