Oculus Rift to Cost $599.99, Starts Shipping in March
Oculus, the virtual reality company owned by Facebook, said the Rift, its much-awaited virtual reality headset, was priced at $599. That cost will net purchasers the Rift VR headset, a sensor, a remote, cables, an Xbox One controller, and two pack-in games to play – EVE Valkyrie and Lucky’s Tale.
According to Oculus, shipments will begin on March 28.
The Oculus Rift price has now been confirmed at $600, with pre-orders now live on the official website following on from the earlier reported countdown. More than 100 virtual reality games and other experiences are coming this year. Oculus is also offering a PC bundle which include some sort of gaming PC and Oculus Rift for USA $1,499 and that one will go on pre-order in February. Preorder ship dates were initially set at March 2016 as previously discussed, but slipped to April, and finally May within a few hours. “You don’t get charged until we ship – no deposit lock-in, no bonus pressure”, said Oculus co-founder Palmer Luckey. Oculus is planning to get a combo of PC plus Oculus rift headset starting at $1499. And while it’s definitely the bleeding edge of current virtual reality technologies, buyers will undoubtedly have to pay for first generation hardware’s snags, issues and disappointments too. Oculus offers a downloadable tool for checking compatibility in its blog post announcing the Rift’s $599 price. Pre-ordering will also secure you a place in line for Touch pre-orders when they open later this year. It was originally funded as a Kickstarter project in 2012.
