Odel Beckham Jr banned for one game after losing appeal
“I am blessed and privileged to play the game I love, and I will do all I can to carry myself in a way that honors the game, the National Football League, my team, my coaches, all my fans and my family moving forward”.
“I appealed my suspension because it is a right granted to all players under the NFL’s CBA and because I owe it to my teammates to do everything I can to be on the field this week”, Beckham said.
“People are going to interpret it. But the truth of the matter is, give me some concrete evidence so I can sit down and get this taken care of”.
The ruling came down from appeals officer James Thrash, a former NFL player, who is jointly appointed by the NFL and the NFL Players Association to hear appeals of on-field discipline. They want to be proud of us, and proud of players like me who represent their team.
Beckham also apologized to the kids who look up to him, and to the parents who have to explain to their kids why Beckham acted the way he did.
I owe Coach Coughlin, our coaches and my teammates an apology.
“There were no flags, no help or any intervention by the officials so I think that kind of just let Odell know what kind of day it was going to be and if anyone was going to stick up for Odell, it had to be himself”.
He will not be allowed to play in Sunday night’s game against the Vikings at Minnesota.
An uncharacteristically muted Norman on Wednesday said he hadn’t heard about the fines and offered no substantive comments about the situation with Beckham last weekend. Was it because Norman got into OBJ’s head…or was it because a Panthers player threatened OBJ before the game? He is expected to appeal.
“The only thing I can remember clearly is what was said to him about he would be the reason that Odell he didn’t play today and other days”, Wing said.
According to Merton Hanks, vice president of football operations for the NFL, Beckham deserved the suspension because his actions put his opponent at an unnecessary risk of getting injured, plus the fact that he could have done something to avoid it.
Giants coach Tom Coughlin said the Panthers provoked Beckham with their actions before the game.
“Everybody knows Odell is such a great player so I’m sure they had plans to maybe get him off his game, ” Wing said. “It is just unfortunate”. Beckham certainly isn’t helping the New York Giants’ hopes of reaching the playoffs, which at this point is already slim to none. “Whatever we have to discuss, we will discuss in private”. The second-year Pro Bowler is barred from team meetings; attending or watching practices; attending Sunday’s game; or having contact with any club personnel except to arrange off-site medical treatment or rehabilitation. He’ll be reinstated Monday.
